In response to devastating floods that occurred in Houston in 1929 and 1935, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District began construction of Addicks and Barker Dams in what was then undeveloped areas in far west Harris and east Fort Bend counties to prevent the loss of life and property and provide flood damage reduction along Buffalo Bayou downstream of the reservoirs and through the center of the City of Houston. Construction of the Addicks and Barker structures were completed in 1948 and 1945 respectively.

    The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Honolulu District (Corps) signed a $3 million cost-share agreement today to develop a watershed plan to support the West Maui "Ridge to Reef" Initiative. The Initiative is one of the first efforts in the state to implement a comprehensive management strategy to address impacts to coral reefs across multiple watersheds. The watershed plan will be funded 75-percent by the Corps and 25-percent by DLNR.

The Ironman, organized by the World Triathlon Corporation, is a premier long-distance sports competition of swimming, biking, and running for athletes in peak physical condition. Free completed the half-Ironman on August 12 in Wiesbaden and Drako completed a full Ironman in Frankfurt, Germany.

    When the new visitor center at Table Rock Lake in southwestern Missouri opened on April 27, 2012, it wasn't just another Corps of Engineers visitor center, but one that would have a significant, positive impact on the entire White River Watershed and the Ozark Mountain region in both Missouri and Arkansas. The road to get the visitor center to its grand opening was several years in the making. In 2007, St. Louis District's Jim Hill did a six-month detail at Table Rock Lake, where he served as the Deputy Operations Project Manager. While there, he worked with the Dewey Short Visitor Center Project Delivery Team to develop a plan to redesign their existing visitor center.
