Providence Felon Senteced for Possessing Firearms
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A Providence man convicted and sentenced on firearm charges in Rhode Island state court in 1999 has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison on two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Neary Prum, 31, was also sentenced today by U.S. District Court Chief Judge Mary M. Lisi to serve 3 years of supervised release upon completion of his prison term.
Prum’s sentence was announced by United States Attorney Peter F. Neronha and Guy N. Thomas, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Boston Field Office.
According to information presented to the court, in July 2011, an investigation by agents from ATF into the purchase of a firearm and ammunition by Prum's wife from a Rhode Island gun shop, and surveillance of Neary Prum and his wife inside and outside of the gun shop, led ATF agents to determine that Neary Prum was in possession of a firearm.
ATF agents, assisted by Providence Police, executed a federal court authorized search warrant at Prum’s Providence residence on October 27, 2011, where agents discovered and seized a loaded .32 caliber pistol and ammunition, and two loaded Glock magazines of 9mm ammunition. Prum was arrested on the same date while at his place of employment.
In a recorded interview with ATF agents following his arrest and again at the time of his guilty plea in U.S. District Court on April 19, 2012, Neary Prum admitted that the firearm and ammunition purchased at the gun shop and the firearm and ammunition seized from his residence belonged to him.
Prum has been detained since his arrest.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen G. Dambruch.
