Military, civilian component and family members must have an U. S. Forces Certificate of License BEFORE driving any vehicle (except a Government vehicle) in Germany. The only exception to this rule is if they have obtained written approval from their appropriate commander to operate a vehicle in Germany for the first 30 days with a valid country license with an international driver license.
International Driving Licenses for U.S Forces Members
International Driving Permits/Licenses (IDPs) are issued by countries
authorized under article 24 of the United Nations Convention on road Traffic
(1949) IDPs are valid translations of valid driving permits into 10 Foreign
Languages. Both are required when traveling through other countries and when
crossing international borders. Persons stationed in Germany can get IDPs
from the local German authorities based upon their U.S. Forces Certificate
of License in the cities where they live or are stationed. In the USA the
State Department has only authorized two agencies to issue International
Driving Permits based upon U.S. state driving licenses; the American
Automobile Association (AAA) and the American Automobile touring Agency. No
other agency in the USA is authorized to issue IDPs. Please be aware that
the internet has many unauthorized agencies issuing illegal and phony IDPs
in a variety of forms including plastic credit card type IDPs. These are all
illegal. Please ensure you only get an IDP in the USA from the two
authorized agencies or in Germany from authorized City and State licensing
offices that issue driving permits.
Vehicle Window Tinting
All motor vehicles brought to Germany by Military and Civilian Members of the Force must have After Market Window Tinting removed from the Driver and Passenger side front windows to include the Front Windshield prior to arrival at Port of Entry into Germany. After Market Window Tinting is any tinting applied to the vehicle's windows after the manufacture of the glass. "No Exceptions"
