Retired Firefighter, Leo Miller, invites SCV to Honor Vietnam Veterans with Congressman McKeon

March 22, 2012 -

On Saturday, March 31, Santa Clarita is invited to celebrate Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day from 5-10pm at the home of Leo Miller located at 24227 Heritage Ln in Newhall. A minimum $10 donation is requested; proceeds go to benefit the Canyon Country Vietnam Veterans of America, Sgt. Ian Gelig Scholarship and the CoC SCV Warrior Scholarship. Event is free to Veterans of the Vietnam war and era. Doors open at 5 and a short program including a special presentation by Congressman McKeon to honor our local Vietnam Veterans will commence at 6 pm.

In January 1978, a small group of Vietnam veteran activists came to Washington, D.C., searching for allies to support the creation of an advocacy organization devoted exclusively to the needs of Vietnam veterans. By working under the theory that a veteran representative should be an advocate for the veteran rather than simply a facilitator, Vietnam Veterans of America quickly established itself as the most competent and aggressive legal-assistance program available to veterans.

These heroes served our nation at a time when they were not appreciated and have since dedicated their lives to insuring all veterans after them are treated with dignity, respect and honor. In 2007, both the U.S. Congress and the U.S. Senate passed resolutions proclaiming March 30th as National “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day” (WHVVD).

Beer, wine, and a generous variety of mixed drinks will be served. Following cocktail hour there will be a full dinner including Caesar Salad, BBQ'd tri-tip (cooked by Tim Ruddell and Jim Grey), BBQ'd chicken, Leo's special Ranch Style Beans, and more. Everything included for a minimum donation of $10.

RSVP is not required but appreciated. Please RSVP to Leo at leonardmiller@sbcglobal.net or on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/#!/events/278895628853241/?context=create. Cash or check donations will be accepted. Please make checks payable to the benefit of your choice: Vietnam Veterans of America, Sgt Ian Gelig Scholarship or the SCV Warrior Scholarship.
