Open Letter to All New Jersey Federal Firearms Licensees — Correction Notice

On November 10, 1998, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms sent an open letter to all New Jersey Federal firearms licensees advising you of your responsibilities under the permanent provisions of the Brady law. This letter advised you that the New Jersey State Police would act as the point of contact for NICS checks for all firearms transactions in New Jersey.

The letter dated November 10, 1998, contains an error in the first sentence of the third numbered paragraph under the heading “Transfers Subject to NICS Check Requirement.” This sentence erroneously states that licensees may contact NICS through either the FBI or the New Jersey State Police. As previously noted in the letter, all NICS checks for firearms transfers in New Jersey must go through the New Jersey State Police. Accordingly, this sentence should read as follows: “Contact NICS through the New Jersey State Police.”

All other information in the letter dated November 10, 1998 is correct. We apologize for any confusion this error may have caused.
