Over 50 Marin and Sonoma County Supervisors,

representatives from business and environmental

groups Reps. Woolsey (D-Petaluma) will lead a workshop with Rep. Oberstar (D-MN), the Senior Democrat on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and officials from Sonoma and Marin counties. The workshop will bring together policy makers, interest groups, business leaders and transportation specialists to discuss how federal assistance through the reauthorization of transportation legislation (TEA-21) can help finance a comprehensive transportation plan for the North Bay. Rep. Oberstar, will play a key role in the TEA-21 reauthorization.

“Improving transportation in the North Bay depends on developing a comprehensive program that includes Highway 101, rail, transit, ferries and bicycles,” said Rep. Woolsey. “The entire community must work together to develop a realistic strategy to alleviate congestion and protect the environment.”

The Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) authorizes Federal funds for highways, highway safety, and transit for the 6-year period of 1998-2003. TEA-21 must be reauthorized during the next Congress, which starts in January 2003. A major goal of the workshop is to provide North Bay officials the opportunity to meet with Rep. Oberstar and to learn about the opportunities and challenges the bill offers.

More than $100 million in federal funds have been secured by Rep. Woolsey to improve transportation in California’s 6th District. Over the past 10 years, Rep. Woolsey secured funds for the Marin Gap Closure, the Novato Narrows and other projects to improve the101 freeway, to increase monies for public transportation, to retrofit the Golden Gate Bridge and to provide funds for transportation projects that use renewable fuels.
