Wow! Fashion Night Out (FNO) was bigger and better than ever before this year! With events in over 15 countries and 500 cities nationwide, the 2012 event was the biggest ever with celebrities from Victoria Beckham to Miss Piggy (seriously!) participating. The event was started in 2009 as a global initiative sponsored by Vogue and the CFDA to encourage consumers to shop and support the fashion industry during a tough economic climate. I spent the evening at the amazing Galleria Dallas where I attended over 12 parties alone in the mall. The best part is I walked the runway and worked it all off! Galleria Dallas has the longest runway in North America, and once you have walked it three times you have walked a mile and half! Amazing!

I wanted to share the TOP FASHION TRENDS FOR FALL I saw at Galleria Dallas and around the globe!

Here is a list of trends we saw!

Patterns: Whether its polka dots, stripes, or florals patterns are in and give a great vibe for Fall!

Sequins: A sequined top or clutch can take any look from day to night!

Top buns: This sassy hairstyle is simple, easy and shows off your face and neck.

Sheer: Sheer tops are a fun, sexy way to dress up any look and still leave a little to the imagination.

Collared Necklaces: Large jewelry is in! Chunky tribal and jeweled necklaces add a splash of color and can even give an outfit the look of a collar. I love them!

Colored jeans: This might be our favorite look: lavender, mint, yellow, you name it! Colored jeans paired with the right top can make any outfit flirty and chic.

Faux Leather: It’s hot hot hot! Leather leggings, jackets and inserted clothing is in! Get the Victoria Beckham look you’ve always wanted with a touch of leather.

Nail designs: From dagger nails to funky designs, women are taking it to the next level with their nail art.

Be sure to look for these trends and more at your local Exchange!

The Exchange’s Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Mike Howard, thanks Steve for his work with the Exchange.

A Moment of Silence: 9/11

September 10, 2012

by Ami, Military Spouse and Exchange Guest Blogger

I was just thirteen when it happened. We were stationed at Eielson AFB, Alaska and it was still dark outside; a few more hours would pass before the sun would rise. It was quiet and peaceful as we slept safely in our beds – the complete opposite of what was happening on the other side of the country.  A few hours later, my mom came into the room my sister and I shared and gently woke us. She told us that there would be no school today, which in our sleep-yearning, groggy minds was news to celebrate. She told us that something had happened in New York City and Washington D.C. and security had been tightened; that everyone would stay at home with their families today. We didn’t really understand it then, so we soon fell back asleep.

When we awoke an hour later, and came down to see our parents glued to the TV screen, it became clear that something very serious had happened. I remember seeing the images being replayed of smoke booming out of the towers, people running around with terror in their eyes, people jumping out of buildings; utter chaos. As we watched the rescuers digging through the rubble and newscasters trying to piece together what had happened, fear began to creep in. How did this happen to our country? Were we safe? What would happen next?

As life began to move on in our corner of the world, fear still lingered. People wondered if we would be targeted next: a thought on many Americans’ minds. Security at the base gates was heavily increased. There were talks of large numbers of military being deployed, which brought the first time I remember being afraid of my dad getting sent away to a war zone for months. We were shaken. Our lives were different now.

But, as Americans often demonstrate, we, along with the rest of the nation, proved to be resilient. We channeled our fear and turned it into strength. I remember going through the gate at Fort Wainwright, a nearby military installation, and my dad asking the guard how he was doing.  He responded with an extremely enthusiastic, “Highly motivated, sir!” Fear had turned into courage and unity, and had brought out the patriotism that we so often place on the back burner. People all over were coming together and loving each other through such a horrible time; looking fear in the eye and saying “Not this time.” We had taken a hit, but this would not bring us down.

That has proven true year after year since that ugly day in September, eleven years ago. And each year when that infamous date comes by, we remember. And we will never forget. We will never forget that day when nearly 3000 lives were lost, needlessly. We will never forget the fear and horror we felt watching it unfold. But we will also never forget the bravery of the men and women who responded and saved lives that day and the days that followed. We will never forget how we banded together and made something strong and beautiful out of a hideous situation. We will never forget how we persevered. Life will never go back to how it was before that tragic day-it changed us, individually, and as a country. But, as people often say, it takes tribulations to show how strong something really is, and from the ashes of September 11th, we, as a nation, proved to ourselves and the world what we are made of. And I don’t think we’ll be the only ones who won’t forget.

What does September 11 mean to you? Leave a comment below to share with us.

The Army & Air Force Exchange Service is asking military shoppers to determine which Exchange Value representative most relates to their relationship with the Exchange.

Since Feb. 24, a retiree, newly enlisted, career military, Officer, reservist and spouse have each highlighted the unique needs and wants of Exchange shoppers.

Now that all five personalities have been introduced in commercials and print, the Exchange is asking shoppers to write a short 220-500 word essay on which Exchange Value representative they feel best depicts their lifestyle and how they identify with their preferred individual.

The contest is open until Oct. 4, 2012. Submissions will be judged on creativity, style and the ability of the entry to convey a connection to an Exchange Value Representative. One winner from each represented category will be chosen to receive a $500 Exchange gift card.

The contest is open to all military and DoD ID card holders 18-years-old and older. Contest entry details, and complete contest rules are available here.

Are You Prepared?

September 6, 2012

When disaster strikes, you want to be prepared. Check out some of the safety tips below to help ensure you’re prepared for fires, hurricanes and earthquakes. Don’t forget that the Exchange has an “Are You Prepared” section of its online website with safety items available for purchase to help you prepare. Click here to browse them.

Preparing for Fire

  • Check to make sure you have a smoke alarm on every level of your home; for added safety, install one inside and another directly outside of each sleeping area.
  • Test those fire alarms once a month to ensure they’re working properly, and replace them as directed by the manufacturer.
  • Plan escape routes from different rooms in your home. Try to plan at least 2 escape routes from each room for added security.
  • Ensure all individuals living in your home are familiar with the escape routes and are prepared to take them.
  • A good test is to practice taking your escape route in the dark; turn off the lights in your home and ensure you can still escape.
  • Make sure that screens on windows can be taken out easily, windows are not stuck, and security bars can be removed properly.
  • A recent study indicates that failure to clean the dust/fiber/lint filter in a clothes dryer is a top reason for residential fires; be sure yours stays clean.
  • For safety information specific to wildfires, click here.

Preparing for Earthquakes

  • Place heavy or large objects on lower shelves of your home, with lighter objects on top ones.
  • Secure shelves tightly to the wall.
  • Store breakable items (such as glass jars) and flammable items (such as pesticides) in lower cabinets with latches that lock.
  • Have practice drills in your home; train yourself and your family to stop, drop, and hold on.
  • Establish safety spots in your home under a sturdy table or against an inside wall. Practice going to these places during these practice drills.
  • Flexible pipe fittings are more resistant to breakage. Consider installing these to avoid gas and water leaks.
  • Check periodically to ensure all defective wires and leaky pipes are repaired; these pose dangerous fire risks.
  • Consider bolting your refrigerator, water heater, furnace, and gas appliances to the floor and strapping them to wall studs.
  • Secure large paintings and mirrors to the wall, and avoid placing them next to couches, beds, or anywhere people would sit.

Preparing for Hurricanes

  • Consider installing a generator for emergencies.
  • Reduce risk of roof damage by fastening it to your home’s frame structure with additional straps and/or clips.
  • Consider installing permanent storm shutters (which offer strong protection), or boarding up windows with plywood. Remember that merely taping windows will not prevent breakage.
  • Reinforce garage doors–strong winds inside a garage can cause expensive and dangerous structural damage.
  • Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts.
  • Prepare and practice an evacuation route; know where to go and how to get there if you need to escape your home. Learn where to go in case you need to find higher ground.

Don’t forget the importance of emergency kits that involve flashlights, batteries, non-perishable foods, flammable-resistant blankets, maps, and mobile phones, among other things. You can find many of these necessary items online here.
