Abstract: In an era of change in reimbursement and reform, providers and hospitals that are best prepared for these changes will most likely prevail in the future. Healthcare disparities continue to prevail despite national efforts to reduce them; providers and institutions are being challenged to do more with less; and healthcare reimbursement is being directly tied to patient satisfaction scores this year. While cultural competence has been viewed as an important issue in the past, it is now becoming a matter of life and death not just for patients, but healthcare providers and institutions as well.
