On March 18th, 2012 the 296th’s Brass Band gave a performance to approximately 120 residents of the Green Hills Nursing Home in Sagamihara-shi, Japan. This band is the newest ensemble of the 296th Army Band. Lead by SFC Daniel Welch, the group is versatile and dynamic, with the ability to perform music ranging from traditional New Orleans jazz, to modern brass band, hip hop, and pop.

The great variety of styles means there's something for everyone to enjoy when the Brass Band rolls into town, and this was no different for the residents of Green Hills. Audience members clapped along to standards like “When the Saints Go Marching In,” and “Joe Avery's Piece.” The breakout hits of the afternoon, however, were Lady Gaga's “Poker Face,” and LMFAO's “Party Rock Anthem” (arranged by the band's own SGT Patrick Sullivan). These two pop anthems had both the staff and residents cheering and bobbing to the beat – proving that great music and a fun atmosphere can transcend age, language, and nationality.

After the performance, the band posed for pictures with the audience, and talked with residents and familymembers. The Brass Band feels lucky to be part of such rewarding experience and is grateful to their hosts for inviting them to take part in this event.
