July 2012

In this issue, you'll learn about this year's Robotics Rodeo, which was a collaborative partnership with the Fort Benning Maneuver Center of Excellence, the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization and TARDEC. The event, held last month at Fort Benning's Maneuver Battle Lab, allowed robotics industry professionals to demonstrate their technologies for users and discuss potential collaborative opportunities.

TARDEC was involved in several recent events with its industry and academic partners. This issue highlights our participation at the Automotive Research Center's Annual Conference, the unveiling of the new Fuel Efficient ground vehicle Demonstrator (FED) Bravo at the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) World Congress, and our support to the 20th Annual Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition. We also explore how TARDEC continues leading the way in robotics improvement through our new Robotics Test Track, and how technology developed by TARDEC and its partners is keeping Soldiers safe from mines, IEDs and other potential threats. The TACOM LCMC recently hosted the Army's top civilian leader, Secretary of the Army John McHugh. This issue features a look at his visit to the Detroit Arsenal.

Several TARDEC associates were recognized by Army leaders and our collaborative partners for their contributions to the warfighter. In this edition, you'll read about engineer Kenneth Greene, who was the only Army civilian to receive this year's Army Suggestion Award, and engineer Amandeep Singh, whose paper was picked as one of the best from this year's SAE World Congress. TARDEC engineer Chris Scott, who works with the Robotic Systems Joint Project Office, was recently recognized by Crain's Detroit Business magazine "2012 Class of 20 in Their 20s," an achievement you'll read more about here.
