Radiocast: Hospital Stays: Reducing Your Risks
Rand: This is Healthcare 411: Information for better
health. There are some events that should never happen in a hospital. Errors
that can cause serious harm or even death. AHRQ Director Dr. Carolyn Clancy:
Dr. Clancy: "Never events" are mistakes that should never happen in
health care, such as serious post-surgical blood clots, surgery on the wrong
body part, or the right surgery but the wrong patients. Consumers can help lower
their likelihood of experiencing a never event and increase the overall quality
of care they receive by being active in their health care. AHRQ offers a great
patient fact sheet called "Five Steps to Safer Health Care," that we developed
in partnership with the American Hospital Association and the American Medical
Association. Our top advice, though, is "Ask a lot of questions."
Rand: This guide is available online at
ahrq.gov/consumer. Healthcare 411
is produced by AHRQ, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, part of the
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. I’m Rand Gardner for Healthcare
411.
