Michigan Man Pleads Guilty to Felon in Possession of Firearm

United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Mikado, Michigan, man charged with Felon in Possession of a Firearm pled guilty to the charge and was sentenced on August 29, 2012, by United States District Judge Roberto A. Lange. Alan J. Moon, age 56, was sentenced to one month in custody, one year of supervised release, a $2,000 fine, and a $100 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund.

On December 7, 1989, Moon was convicted of a felony in Michigan. On November 14, 2011, Moon, a resident of the state of Michigan, was apprehended by South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks and admitted to hunting in South Dakota without a non-resident hunting license, in violation of SDCL ยง 41-6-20. Moon surrendered a .30-06 caliber rifle with which he harvested a deer. Further investigation revealed Moon's 1989 felony conviction and that he was prohibited from ever possessing a firearm due to that conviction.

The investigation was conducted by the ATF and South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Marie H. Ruettgers.

Moon was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal.
