Tonight Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen will be honored at the 24th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Awards Dinner with the Courageous Leadership Award. The awards dinner was created in 1988 by Carl Snowden and was designed to honor the legacy of Dr. King by honoring men and women who help to keep his legacy alive.

“I am honored to receive this award tonight.  Dr. King is an inspiration to people throughout the world, and his memory lives on in those who work to live out his dream every day. One of the most important lessons I carry with me is the idea of the fierce urgency of now.  It is easy to postpone action on difficult issues that need to be addressed, but we cannot be lulled into complacency,” said Congressman Van Hollen. “Health care reform is a perfect example of that. Many thought we should wait or do something smaller – take the easy path.  But we persevered, and as a result more than 30 million people will have access to affordable health care.  That is the lesson of Dr. King – when problems seem insurmountable, we must continue to fight for a better future.”
