The SMDC/ARSTRAT nanosatellites were launched as part of the Army's continuing effort to provide low-cost, tactically responsive space capabilities through the use of small satellite technologies. This is the second launch of U.S. Army built nanosatellites. The U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command is the Army lead for the small satellite program.
