A United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket blasts off from Space Launch Complex-3 at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif., on Sept. 13 with two U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command nanosatellites on board. The SMDC/ARSTRAT nanosatellites were launched as part of the Army's continuing effort to provide low-cost, tactically responsive space capabilities through the use of small satellite technologies. This is the second launch of U.S. Army built nanosatellites. The U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command is the Army lead for the small satellite program.
