FEMA Expands Earlier Disaster Declaration

Washington, D.C.  – Today, U.S. Rep. Peter T. King (R-NY), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, applauded the Obama Administration’s decision to expand the major disaster declaration for the State of New York following the severe storms and devastating flooding that occurred in Nassau and Suffolk Counties and other parts of New York in March. FEMA announced last night that it has extended the timeframe of the April 16 disaster declaration, now March 13 through March 31.

King said: “I commend FEMA for expanding this disaster declaration to include additional time during which Long Island endured these severe storms. As soon as the storm hit, I called on Governor Paterson to request that President Obama issue this declaration. After the President’s disaster declaration, I called on him to approve the Governor’s request for an expansion. I commend Governor Paterson, President Obama, and FEMA for recognizing the serious impact that these storms had on Long Island and the rest of the State. This extension means that additional federal aid can flow from FEMA to New York to help Long Island recover from these storms.”
