Now Playing Hyperventilation

April 5, 2012 | Running time 7:33

Our normal breathing rate is chemically regulated so that we breathe 12 - 16 times per minute. With exercise and workload demand, the body will respond by increasing the breathing rate as to replenish oxygen and decrease CO2. However, if the stimuli are fear, anxiety or stress that increases the breathing rate, it can upset the delicate chemistry of the blood and bring about hypoxia like symptoms.
