CRITICAL HABITAT INFORMATION

 

What is the piping plover? The piping plover is a small shorebird that historically nested along many of the beaches of the Great Lakes.   Since 1983, the number of nesting pairs has ranged from 12 to 32. In recent history, all of the Great Lakes pairs nested in Michigan.  Then, for the first time in years, a pair of plovers nested in the Apostle Islands area of Lake Superior in Wisconsin in 1998 and again at the same site in 1999.  Photo courtesy of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
