Welcome to the SciPAC
Welcome to the USPHS
Commissioned Corps Scientist Category web site.
This site is
supported by the Scientist Professional Advisory
Committee (SciPAC) and provides news and
information to Scientist Officers as well as
links for civilian scientists interested in
joining the Corps.
The SciPAC provides
advice and consultation to the Office of the
Surgeon General and to the Scientist Chief
Professional Officer on professional and
personnel issues. CAPT Sharon O.

Visibility
The Scientist
Category is a diverse group of officers.
It is precisely this diversity that allows
Scientist Officers to function at every point
along the public health spectrum from the
initial scientific discovery to application to
policy and administration. Given the
current relevance of Scientist Officers and the
potential for continued impact on improving the
nation’s health, it is recommended that this
group’s diverse skill set continue to be
highlighted and that future efforts focus on
increased visibility and continued integration
with other Professional Advisory Committees and
agencies.

Advisory Committee, SciPAC, has several
subcommittees which are designed to help
you as a Scientist Officer develop
professionally. The subcommittees are
chaired by PAC members, but membership in
the subcommittees is open to all
interested Scientist officers. You can

The Officer Basic Course
(OBC) Team of the Career Development
Subcommittee is comprised of scientist
officers from the Washington DC
Metropolitan area. At least one member
of this group each month attends the
OBC open house and graduation ceremony
to welcome new active duty scientists
to the Corps and to answer any
category-specific questions. Members
of the OBC Team that attend the
graduation ceremony present a
personalized letter from the CPO, CAPT
Sharon Williams-Fleetwood and
scientist category coin to each new

About
SciPAC
The
Scientist Professional
Advisory Committee (SciPAC)
represents a large number of
professional interests and
disciplines, and recognizes
the importance of the
cumulative efforts of
individual scientific
contributions to the mission
of the U.S. Public Health
Service. The committee
functions in a resource and
advisory capacity to assist
in development,
coordination, and evaluation
of activities related to the
respective scientific
disciplines in the PHS.
Chapter 5 of the Scientist
Handbook further describes
the functions of the SciPAC.
Membership on the SciPAC is
professionally rewarding. It
provides the opportunity to:
-
meet,
know and work with a
number of other highly
motivated PHS
scientists;
-
advise
the Surgeon General via
the Chief Scientist
Officer on
issues/policies
affecting commissioned
corps and civil service
scientists, and;
-
provide
guidance and assistance
to other scientists on
career development,
staffing etc.
Membership
assumes your commitment in
providing the necessary
support to make this
committee effective. For
more information on becoming
a member, please visit the Membership
page.
Officers
interested in learning more
about the SciPAC are
encouraged to read the SciPAC
