Healthy Eating Index-2005 Total and Component Scores for Adults Aged 20 and Over: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2003-2004 (12/29/2011)
Females and the oldest age group were more successful in meeting the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005 recommendations for the fruit and vegetable components and discretionary calories, and had a slightly higher overall diet quality score than their counterparts.

Trends in Intake of Energy and Macronutrients in Adults From 1999-2000 through 2007-2008 (12/7/2010)
In 2007-2008 the average energy intake for men was 2,504 kilocalories (kcals) and for women it was 1,771 kcals. For 2007-2008, the average carbohydrate intake was 50.5% kcals for women; average protein intake was 15.5% kcals for women; average total fat intake was 33.5% kcals for women; and average saturated fat intake was 11.1% kcals for women.

Majority of Americans not Meeting Recommendations for Fruit and Vegetable Consumption
No U.S. state is meeting national objectives for consumption of fruits and vegetables, according to the first report to provide state-by-state data about fruit and vegetable consumption and policies that may help Americans eat more fruits and vegetables.  National and state-specific information is reported in the State Indicator Report for behavioral indicators and policy and environmental indicators.

Incorporating Away-From-Home Food Into a Healthy Eating Plan - Research to Practice Series PDF
A growing body of literature indicates that the eating of away-from-home food can be a factor influencing energy intake. Informed choices pertaining to away-from-home food could help reduce calorie overconsumption and aid in weight management.
