Transformation Update
In July 2003, HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson announced the Transformation of the U.S.P.H.S. Commissioned Corps. Secretary Thompson announced that the Transformation would:
- Streamline the Corps, while increasing its size and scope;
- Add clinical positions that serve the Indian Health Service;
- Provide structure to make the Corps 100% deployable;
- Improve Corps management and development systems; and
- Develop reserve components.
Since 2003, Commissioned Corps management has been engaged in collecting information, analyzing and preparing recommendations regarding the future structure, composition, and management of the Corps. CDC has been well represented in those activities, as several CDC and ATSDR officers have participated in work groups, focus groups, and various discussions.
