Arthritis as a Potential Barrier to Physical Activity Among Adults with Obesity - United States, 2007 and 2009 (6/7/2011)
Adults with obesity are less likely than adults without obesity to follow physical activity recommendations, despite the known benefits of physical activity for weight loss and weight maintenance (1,2). Arthritis is a common comorbidity of adults with obesity (3), and arthritis-related joint pain and functional limitation might contribute substantially to low rates of physical activity among adults with obesity.

A National Public Health Agenda for Osteoarthritis was developed by
more than 70 stakeholders following a call-to-action led by the Arthritis
Foundation and CDC. A National Public Health Agenda for Osteoarthritis
sets the stage for a collaborative and focused action to achieve three
overall goals during the next three to five years.

Arthritis
as a Potential Barrier to Physical Activity among Adults With Heart
Disease- United States, 2005 and 2007 (2/27/09)
The results indicated that, for the 2 years combined, arthritis affected 57.4%
of adults with heart disease (HD), compared with 27.4% of adults in the general
population. Among adults with HD, the likelihood of physical inactivity was 30%
greater compared with that of persons with HD but without arthritis, when adjusted
for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education level, and body mass index.
