Description: In an effort to educate older Americans and general audiences about the importance of flu vaccination, AARP planned a series of digital communications activities beginning in late September and continuing throughout flu season. Utilizing CDC’s flu resources, AARP created an online flu quiz, an article about flu, and a blog post. These informative pieces provided the organization with content to link to from its social media channels, including Facebook and two Twitter accounts. After the initial promotions, AARP continued to share information about flu with its audiences leading up to NIVW. During NIVW, AARP sustained its educational outreach through a new blog post and by sharing information via Facebook and Twitter, including promotion of CDC’s NIVW Twitter chat.

Activity: Communications Outreach
Description: In order to reach cancer survivors, patients, caregivers and family members, as well as general audiences, the American Cancer Society planned a series of flu communications activities beginning in September. A feature article in the Healthy Living newsletter informed general audiences, and cancer patients and survivors, about the importance of annual flu vaccination. In early October, the organization wrote a feature blog post describing the high risk of flu complications for cancer patients and survivors. The post highlighted the idea that family and friends of people with cancer can support them by getting a flu shot, and included a link to CDC’s Protect Yourself, Protect Your Family PSA. The organization promoted the blog post through its social media channels, including Facebook and two Twitter accounts. During NIVW, the organization once again shared information on Facebook and Twitter about the risk of flu complications for cancer patients and encouraged caregivers and others to get vaccinated. Additionally, the Society promoted CDC’s NIVW Twitter chat.
Evaluation: The American Cancer Society will evaluate its efforts by examining website metrics for its blog post and social media metrics, including sharing of the information, comments on posts, and likes.

Description: “Share Fun. Not the Flu.” is the NH Immunization Program’s Fall 2012 parent and student awareness campaign made up of educational and communication components designed to teach New Hampshire students, parents and staff ways to stop the spread of germs that cause the flu and the importance of being immunized. Child care centers and schools are invited to participate in this campaign to promote the easy steps to help their students stay healthy so they don't miss school or other fun activities due to illness!
Evaluation: Number of contest participants, number of staff, parents, and students who have access to bulletin board information, comparative and school absentee rates 2011 vs. 2012 and increase in school-based clinic immunization rates for participating schools.
