Press Release – U.S. Transportation Secretary LaHood Announces $7.1 Million Grant for Canandaigua, New York Airport

WASHINGTON – U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today announced a $7.1 million Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grant to lengthen and widen the runway at Canandaigua Airport.

“This funding will help improve Canandaigua Airport for passengers and pilots alike,” Secretary LaHood said. “This investment will help promote safety at the airport and economic growth throughout the surrounding region.”

The FAA Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grant will fund a 2,300 foot addition to the airport’s only runway, increasing its length to 5,500 feet. The project will also widen the runway from 75 feet to 100 feet. The airport is adjacent to an industrial park that houses large companies that need a longer and wider runway for their aircraft.

Construction will begin in the spring of 2013 and will take approximately one year to complete.

“This grant will be an economic benefit for both the airport and nearby businesses,” said Acting FAA Administrator Michael Huerta.

AIP provides $3.35 billion in annual funding for projects that are vital to maintaining the safety, capacity, and environmental stewardship of our nation’s airports.  More than 3,300 airports are eligible for AIP grants benefiting commercial passengers, cargo operations, and general aviation activities throughout the nation.
