Hispanic-Serving Health Professions Schools (HSHPS) is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization, established in 1996 and created as part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ “Hispanic Agenda for Action” initiative, with the intention of addressing the mounting public health issue of providing quality and culturally competent healthcare to Hispanics living in the United States. By providing essential resources for academic and career development to students, faculty, and other health professionals including internships, fellowships, and professional development seminars, HSHPS addresses the health disparities that exist in the Hispanic community.

The goal of the training program is to increase the overall knowledge of public health, to provide the necessary clinical and research skills needed to enhance trainees’ careers in the health field, and to increase the overall understanding of the Hispanic health issues.

The program will match trainees with a mentor, an experienced scientist/researcher at the government agency or academic institution, depending on their area of interest and experience. The trainee will assist their mentor with various aspects of a project, while attending seminars and networking events.

HSHPS not only works with government agencies such as CDC, OMH, NIOSH, and NCHS but also collaborates with various HSHPS member institutions across the country in order to provide intensive training programs on:

1. How to prevent & control specific diseases most prevalent among the Hispanic community

2. U.S. - Mexico border health especially environmental health issues

3. Global health issues in Latin America

These programs offer participants unique opportunities to help them better comprehend the significant health implications of the issues occurring to the Hispanic community in the U.S.

Eligibility

~ Applicant does not have to be Hispanic to apply

~ Spanish fluency varies depending on program

~ Current or recent graduate (less than three years) of a master’s or doctoral program in the health field

~ U.S. citizen or permanent resident

~ Must speak and write fluently in English

~ Individuals with five or more years of professional experience in the health field are not eligible to apply for this program
