Ryan Newman: Technology is always moving mankind forward. Be it something as simple as home conveniences or as strong as a US Army Apache Helicopter. It has always been said that what you see on the track on Sunday will be in the showroom on Monday. But forward-thinking technology is more than just a catchy slogan. It has also made it safer for drivers like me to push the limits of my US Army, Number 39, Chevy Impala SS.The technology involved in safety has changed a lot in racing, specifically NASCAR racing. The 'CAR OF TOMORROW' - the new car, the safer car - has definitely made it safer for the drivers.
It actually has foam, inside here, between the sheet metal and the construction of the chassis, on both sides, and in different areas in the car. The bumpers and the way they work and the way the cars crush - are a lot safer. The second part of that are the walls, the safer walls that we have now, making them soft and safer.
The HANS device, that I have, that I use is made of carbon fiber. It keeps my neck and my spine loaded up uniformally - so I don't get whiplash - or extreme whiplash, of a lower basal skull fracture type situation. There are a lot of things that have changed in the last five years I've been involved in NASCAR to make it safer due to technology and componentry.
Safety is a key component of a successful mission. Just as the Army Soldiers that I represent every weekend are equipped with the latest advancements in safety - Technology helps keep me focused on Mission First - winning the race...
