Vaccine Analytic Unit (VAU)
The VAU is a collaborative vaccine safety research infrastructure between the Department of Defense (DoD) and CDC with input from the FDA. The VAU utilizes the DoD's Defense Medical Surveillance System (DMSS) database to conduct evaluations of AEFIs potentially associated with the current anthrax vaccine according to the published anthrax vaccine adsorbed (AVA) research agenda.
Recently, the focus of the VAU has been expanded beyond biodefense vaccines to assess whether specific AEFIs are associated with vaccines administered in the DoD population that have critical implications for civilian public health. The VAU is also active in building the infrastructure for conducting rapid safety assessment of vaccines used within the DoD.
