About the Yellow Fever Vaccine Course

Course Description

This course is a training tool for designated providers of yellow fever vaccine and health-care providers who advise travelers and/or would like to become designated providers of yellow fever vaccine.  The course consists of two lessons. Lesson 1, Yellow Fever: History, Epidemiology, and Vaccine Information, explores the global history and epidemiology of yellow fever disease. Next, it describes safe and appropriate use of the vaccine, including a detailed discussion of the precautions and contraindications to yellow fever vaccination.

Lesson 2, The Pre-travel Consultation and Best Practices for Yellow Fever Vaccine Providers and Clinics, presents systematic instruction on conducting a thorough pre-travel consultation. Additional topics include the process of becoming a designated yellow fever vaccination provider, best practices for providers and clinics that give yellow fever vaccination, and an overview of the International Certificate of Vaccination and Prophylaxis (ICVP).

Goal

The goal of this course is to provide physicians, physician assistants, pharmacists, nurses, and health education specialists with information about yellow fever, the disease and the vaccine.  Health-care providers can use this information to --

• Make appropriate decisions regarding the vaccination
• Handle the vaccine safely
• Offer sound advice to travelers before they travel
• Conduct appropriate travel and pre-travel consultations
• Utilize best practices within yellow fever vaccination clinics
• Comply with International Health Regulations and Certificate Requirements

Learning Objectives

After completing this Web-based course, the learner should be able to—

• Identify the epidemiology of yellow fever, including causes, transmission, and clinical features of the disease.
• Identify common and rare adverse events, as well as precautions and contraindications associated with yellow fever vaccine administration.
• Recognize the quality and effectiveness of clinical interventions to improve health for specific audiences.
• Recognize elements of a pre-travel consultation and best practices to follow in yellow fever designated clinics.

Prerequisite Skills and Knowledge

No prior knowledge of the yellow fever virus or vaccination is required to take this course. However, it is strongly recommended that the modules be taken in sequence.
