2012 KSDE Annual Conference -
The KSDE Annual Conference focuses on school improvement and the continuous improvement of academic performance for all students. The theme for this year's conference is Kansas, Oh the Places We'll Go!, will showcase Kansas school success stories as well as address some of our schools' most significant challenges for the future. The conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency and Century II Convention Center in Wichita, Kansas.

Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment(EIPA) Video Conference Workshops -
It’s that time again! KSDE Special Education Services and the EIPA Diagnostic Center are excited to offer four video conference workshops for the 2012-2013 academic years. The workshops are designed for interpreters working in K-12 classroom settings, community interpreters, future interpreters, K-12 interpreter mentors, deaf educators and individuals supervising or working with interpreters. The workshops are free and will be offered via video conferencing technology and can be downloaded to multiple sites.

Kansas Granted ESEA Waiver -
Kansas’ ESEA Flexibility Request, granting waivers from certain provisions of the federal No Child Left Behind legislation, was approved by the U.S. Department of Education on July 19, 2012. The approval allows the state to implement a new and more meaningful accountability system for Kansas schools and school districts. Discipline Reports -
Discipline reports for local school districts and the state are now easier to find.  Just look for "Discipline Reports" under the most requested topics drop down box on the KSDE homepage, or on the Data, Media and Reports page.  By following those links, you can get information on in-school and out-of-school suspensions and expulsions by incident type.  The discipline information is available at the building level by accessing K-12 reports under quick links on the School Finance page.  Find the school you're interested in under the "schools" tab and choose the discipline report under the school statistics. 
OER offers access to free learning resources -
Kansas educators can gain easy access to a variety of free digital resources through the Kansas State Department of  Education’s Open Education Resources website. Open Education Resources (OER) provides links to digital textbooks, E-books and thousands of free online books, as well as links to resources for the visually impaired. All of the resources on OER are in the public domain and can be customized and modified to fit individual needs, or combined with other materials. These resources are ideal for teaching, learning, research and more. Check out the Open Education

FERPA amendments finalized -
Final regulations amending the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) have been published in the Federal Register. Effective Jan. 3, 2012, the regulations offer greater flexibility to states to share data that can be helpful in judging the effectiveness of educational programs, while maintaining safeguards to student privacy. State Board of Education members received data at their meeting in September from the 2011-2012 state assessments showing the first overall decline in student performance since No Child Left Behind was implemented in 2001.

TOPEKA, Oct. 8, 2012—Three 2012 Kansas high school graduates received the College Board State AP Scholar Award based on their outstanding performance on 2012 Advanced Placement (AP) Examinations.   View Article

TOPEKA – The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) has updated statewide information on the 2011-2012 Building Report Card to reflect results only for students who took state-administered assessments after discovering a calculation error related to three districts that were allowed to use ACT assessments in place of state assessments.   View Article

TOPEKA -- Kansas public school students saw an increase in mean scores for all content areas on the 2012 SAT college entrance exam, according to information released today by the College Board.   View Article

TOPEKA – Kansas will receive $349,715 in grant funds from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to assist in promoting healthy eating habits and nutrition education in Kansas schools.   View Article

Berblinger, a seventh- and eighth-grade intensive assistance teacher for mathematics and reading at Prairie Hills Middle School in Hutchinson (Buhler USD 313), were named Region 1 finalists for the 2013 Kansas Teacher of the Year award today.

A slightly higher percentage of Kansas high school graduates met college readiness benchmarks on the 2012 ACT college entrance exam, even as the average composite score for graduates bumped down by a tenth of a percent.   View Article
