Question: Wang Yi, the People’s Republic of China Director of the Taiwan Affairs Office, will be visiting the U.S. Will he be meeting with anyone from the Department? If so, what will be discussed? Have State Department officials met with officials from this office before an unusual meeting?

Answer: PRC Taiwan Affairs Office Director Wang Yi will meet with Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg on Wednesday, June 24. They will discuss U.S.-China relations and topics of mutual interest. It is not unusual for State Department officials to meet with directors or other officials from China’s Taiwan Affairs Office in Washington DC or in Beijing.
