National Register of Historic Places Program: Special Features

The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the Nation's historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service's National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America's historic and archeological resources.

Hispanic Heritage Month: September 15 - October 15

The National Register of Historic Places lists many properties significant for Hispanic Heritage. We take the opportunity of Hispanic Heritage Month to highlight just some of the properties that exemplify the contributions of Hispanic culture and achievement. This month we highlight Nuestra Seňora Reina de La Paz (commonly known as La Paz) the site is associated with Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers of America (UFW), and the Montoya Ranch in Colorado. Our new forms have been approved by OMB. These forms were introduced in April, and have now been accepted.

Summary of Changes:
• accept lat/long coordinates
• easier formatting
• allows an alternative to the USGS map.

Weekly Highlight:
PT-658 (motor torpedo boat), Multnomah County, Oregon
Built during World War II in 1945 at Higgins Industries Boatworks in New Orleans, PT-658 is a fully-restored and operational example of a rare 625 Class Higgins Patrol Torpedo Boat (PT Boat). Although they were small and crewed by only 16 sailors, the PT boat was an indispensible part of combat actions used against the Axis powers throughout the Pacific and European theaters of war. National Park Week (April)
To celebrate National Park Week, the National Register of Historic Places is featuring one of our nation's many treasures, Glacier National Park and its associated cultural resources. Also included are links to the many events occurring in parks this week and the TwHP lesson plan on Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (May)
In this National Register feature, learn about historic places listed in the National Register, just a few of the publications, and National Park units significant for their association with the remarkable history and achievements of Asian and Pacific Americans.

Preservation Month (May)
Communities and states throughout the United States celebrating the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Preservation Month. Our feature links to many web sites important to historic preservation.

Jewish American Heritage Month (May)
The National Register of Historic Places is pleased to promote awareness of and appreciation for the historical accomplishments of Jewish Americans during Jewish American Heritage Month.

Great Outdoors Month (June)
The National Register of Historic Places is pleased to promote awareness of and appreciation for Great Outdoors Month.

July: Celebrate Independence Day all month long.

Archeology Month (August)
Archeology is the study of the past ways of life through material remains. During August we promote understanding of this very significant resource type in the National Register.

Back to School: (Early September) The National Register of Historic Places lists many properties significant for education. We are pleased to promote the awareness of and appreciation for education related properties.
