Due date for Fort Hood report passes without news

Last month, following the Fort Hood tragedy President Obama announced a government-wide review to look at all of the intelligence on accused shooter Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, and to report whether better communication between law enforcement officials and military officials could have prevented the tragedy. Those results were due yesterday, and White House began combing through those details yesterday afternoon.
But don't expect to hear much else about it this week.
Administration officials said yesterday they don't expect any official announcements on the findings until sometime next week.
That's partially because some of the elements of the investigation are still filtering in (Defense officials say it may take a few more days to get every item requested over to the White House) but also because all of the news coming out of the Oval Office this week will be focused on Afghanistan. White House officials don't want details of FBI missteps and increased military stress to color tonight's announcement of additional troop deployments.
But starting next week, after the dust settles on the new Afghanistan strategy, expect more Congressional hearings and more unsettling details about who knew what leading up to the shooting. A Defense Department report on broader issues of base security and servicemember stress is due at the start of the new year.
