International and Foreign Language Education (IFLE) advises the Assistant Secretary for Postsecondary Education on matters affecting postsecondary, international, and foreign language education. This office is responsible for encouraging and promoting the study of foreign languages and cultures of other countries at the elementary, secondary, and postsecondary levels in the United States.
International and Foreign Language Education also administers both domestic and overseas programs. Domestic programs, authorized under Title VI of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended (HEA), are designed to strengthen the capability and performance of American education in foreign languages and in area and international studies.
Overseas programs, authorized under the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act (Fulbright-Hays Act) are intended to improve secondary and postsecondary teaching and research concerning other cultures and languages, training of specialists, and the American public's general understanding of the peoples of other countries.
Beginning in Fiscal Year 2011, IFLE administers the international special focus programs authorized under Title VII (Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education - FIPSE) of the HEA. These international programs are designed to support: multilateral, multi-institutional collaboration; student exchange, faculty cooperation and exchange; shared common curricula; mutual recognition of credits, acquisition of host country language; and apprenticeships and other work activities.
