Rangel Congratulates Northern Manhattan Coalition For Immigrant Rights For $200,000 Grant

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Charles Rangel congratulated the Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights (NMCIR) for winning the $200,000 Citizenship and Integration Grant given by the USCIS Office of Citizenship.

“I proudly recognize the crucial role immigrants play in our community.  I couldn’t be happier to make this announcement on the 125th Anniversary of the Statue of Liberty," Rangel said. "Today's immigrants should have the same freedom and opportunities as those who came before them.”

The award has been awarded to Northern Manhattan Coalition for Immigrant Rights to expand the range of citizenship preparation services available to permanent residents, help these immigrants become citizens of the United States and foster their integration into American society.  The funding for this competitive grant program was made possible by funds provided by the Department of Defense and the Full-Year Continuing Appropriations Act (Public Law 112-10).

The NMCIR was founded in 1982 on the basis of educating, protecting and defending the rights of immigrants.  They help over 6,000 immigrant families a year with such issues as: immigration, citizenship, deportation, voter participation, family reunification and civic/ESL.
They serve both immigrants who have been in this country for decades and those who have recently arrived in our country.

“Our immigration system is broken and we have to fix it,” stated Rangel.  “That is why we must continue to support great programs like NMCIR and support legislation like the DREAM Act that will allow generations of young immigrants to receive proper education, giving them the means to contribute to our great nation.”

First introduced in 2009, The Dream Act was reintroduced in this House of Representatives this year.  It would provide 360,000 undocumented high school graduates with a legal means to work and attend college, and could provide incentives for another 715,000 students between the ages of 5 and 17 to finish high school and pursue postsecondary education.  You can join Congressman Rangel and President Obama in supporting the DREAM Act here.
