INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH AND PROGRAMS BRANCH UPDATE

Tuberculosis Is a Seasonal Disease in the United States

CDC/DTBE has reported that tuberculosis is a seasonal disease in the United States with a peak in spring and trough in late fall. The degree of seasonality is greater with younger age and among cases associated with clusters with matching genotypes, suggesting recent disease transmission. We concluded that seasonality of TB is more likely due to seasonal variation in events of disease transmission, rather than in events of activation of latent infection. This will guide future research in the role of the environment in disease transmission and potential mitigation of season specific risk.
