Explanation of Figures 1–5. Click on titles or images to go back to Section 1.

Figure 1 is a map of the locations of ART clinics in the United States and Puerto Rico, 2008.

There are five statistics listed at the bottom of the map:

  • Number of ART clinics in the United States in 2008: 475
  • Number of ART clinics that submitted data in 2008: 436
  • Number of ART cycles reported in 2008: 148,055. Note: This number does not include 2 cycles in which a new treatment procedure was being evaluated.
  • Number of live-birth deliveries resulting from ART cycles started in 2008: 46,326
  • Number of infants born as a result of ART cycles performed in 2008: 61,426

Figure 2 is a pie chart representing the types of ART cycles in the United States, 2008. Note: Total does not equal 100% due to rounding.

  • Frozen donor 4.3%, (6,344 cycles)
  • Fresh donor 8.0%, (11,777 cycles)
  • Frozen nondonor 17.1%, (25,261 cycles)
  • Fresh nondonor 70.7%, (104,673 cycles)
  • New treatment procedures <0.1%, (2 cycles)

Figure 3 is a pie chart representing ART use by age group in the United States, 2008. Note: Total does not equal 100% due to rounding.

  • Age: <35, 38.8%, (57,508 cycles)
  • Age: 35–37, 21.2%, (31,437 cycles)
  • Age: 38–40, 19.6%, (29,074 cycles)
  • Age: 41–42, 9.6%, (14,162 cycles)
  • Age: 43–44, 6.0%, (8,893 cycles)
  • Age: >44, 4.7%, (6,981 cycles)

Figure 4 is a bar graph representing the types of ART cycles by age group in the United States, 2008.

  • Age <35, Percentage of total nondonor cycles, 96%. Of these nondonor cycles—75% were fresh nondonor and 21% were frozen nondonor. Percentage of total donor cycles, 3%. Of these donor cycles—2% were fresh donor and 1% was frozen donor.  Note: Total does not equal 100% due to rounding.
  • Age 35–37, Percentage of total nondonor cycles, 94%. Of these nondonor cycles—74% were fresh nondonor and 20% were frozen nondonor. Percentage of total donor cycles, 6%. Of these donor cycles—4% were fresh donor and 2% were frozen donor.
  • Age 38–40, Percentage of total nondonor cycles, 90%. Of these nondonor cycles—75% were fresh nondonor and 15% were frozen nondonor. Percentage of total donor cycles, 10%. Of these donor cycles—7% were fresh donor and 3% were frozen donor.
  • Age 41–42, Percentage of total nondonor cycles, 79%. Of these nondonor cycles—69% were fresh nondonor and 10% were frozen nondonor. Percentage of total donor cycles, 21%. Of these donor cycles—14% were fresh donor and 7% were frozen donor.
  • Age 43–44, Percentage of total nondonor cycles, 63%. Of these nondonor cycles—55% were fresh nondonor and 8% were frozen nondonor.  Percentage of total donor cycles, 38%. Of these donor cycles—25% were fresh donor and 13% were frozen donor. Note: Total does not equal 100% do to rounding.
  • Age >44, Percentage of total nondonor cycles, 28%. Of these nondonor cycles—22% were fresh nondonor and 6% were frozen nondonor. Note: Total does not equal 100% due to rounding. Percentage of total donor cycles, 71%. Of these donor cycles—41% were fresh donor and 30% were frozen donor.

Figure 5 is a bar graph representing percentages of ART cycles that resulted in live births by type of ART and clinic size in the United States, 2008. Note: Clinic size is reflected by the number of ART cycles performed in 2008.

  • Clinic size: <94 cycles, Fresh nondonor 29.6%, Frozen nondonor 22.6%, Fresh donor 43.1%, Frozen donor 24.4%
  • Clinic size: 94–187 cycles, Fresh nondonor 29.5%, Frozen nondonor 27.2%, Fresh donor 47.3%, Frozen donor 33.6%
  • Clinic size: 188–412 cycles, Fresh nondonor 31.1%, Frozen nondonor 28.3%, Fresh donor 49.3%, Frozen donor 33.1%
  • Clinic size: >412 cycles, Fresh nondonor 29.7%, Frozen nondonor 28.6%, Fresh donor 51.1%, Frozen donor 29.6%
