Experience
the Civil War
Rutherford B. Hayes loved being a soldier. He preferred the title “General Hayes” to all others – despite the fact that he had been a U.S. Congressman, three-term Ohio governor, and 19th President of the United States. After leaving the White House in 1881, Hayes regularly hosted reunions of his Civil War regiment, the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, at his Spiegel Grove estate.
The Hayes Presidential Center re-creates those reunions on the weekend closest to Hayes’ birthdate with its Hayes Civil War Reenactment. This year’s event, made possible in large part by title sponsor Memorial Hospital, takes place 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 6 & 7. Hundreds of costumed Civil War reenactors camp on the grounds of Spiegel Grove and participate in three reenactments of the Battle of Cloyd's Mountain - a conflict in which President Hayes took part.
Additional sponors of this living history event are Curwood Inc., Heinz North America, and Mosser Construction Inc.
Admission to the Civil War Reenactment is $4/adult and $2/children ages 6-12. Click here for a full schedule of events. For details on off-site parking and shuttle stops click here.
