The following table includes nutrition and physical activity examples you can do at your worksiteWhile these are not evidence-based community guide recommendations or promising practices for weight control, they are additional examples of activities that can be implemented at your worksite.

Activities-General/Education

  • Post motivational signs near stairs to encourage physical activity.
  • Offer a health benefit for weight maintenance visits.
  • Invite a dietician or other health speaker to present at a "lunch-and-learn."
    • Connect with your state American Dietetics Association.
    • Contact a local hospital for a presenter.
  • Provide a web forum for employees to share tips, recipes, and success stories.
  • Provide health education information through worksite communications.166
  • Invite employees to share their weight loss successes and challenges.
  • Host a health screening with a local hospital or community center (e.g. blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes).167

Activities-Healthy Eating

  • Offer nutritious food in dining facilities.
  • Offer healthy options at meetings or events where food and drink are provided.168
  • Provide a refrigerator and microwave at the office so employees can bring healthy food from home.168
  • Use competitive pricing to make healthier choices in the cafeteria and vending machines more economical.168
  • Organize a farmer's markets where employees buy fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Offer nutritious choices in vending machines.169
  • Post lists of nearby restaurants that offer healthy options.168
  • Hold a healthy recipe cooking competition or organize a healthy potluck; then compile a book of the recipes to be distributed to all 168

Activities-Physical Activity

  • Provide bike racks, showers, and changing facilities.168
  • Offer flexible work hours to allow for physical activity during the day.168
  • Introduce organization cost-sharing for gym or health club memberships.170
  • Provide fitness testing on-site by a qualified professional.168
  • Provide outdoor exercise areas such as fields and trails for employee use.43
  • Provide an on-site exercise facility that is available for use before, during, and after normal work hours.44 
  • Make facilities and programming available to employee family members.166
  • Teach employees about stretching exercises and small changes to get staff moving around the office.168
  • Provide employees with lists of local races, marathons, and charity walks.168
  • Encourage "walk and talk" meetings.171
  • Make walk/run maps of surrounding neighborhoods and label distance.
  • Offer on-site or promote local exercise classes.168
  • Post motivational signs or start a stair-walking challenge to compete for the highest number of steps climbed.43
  • Set up walking groups that meet at different times and have different destinations.168
  • Provide employees with pedometers so they can log their steps and see how far they've walked.168
  • Organize staff events such as a sports day, a physical activity picnic, a bowling night, or a soccer or softball game.168
