For a driver, the ultimate racecar is the perfect combination of speed and power. Reaching that perfection is the ultimate chase for our race team, and leading the charge is the crew chief of the number 39 U.S. Army car, Tony Gibson. Now Tony, what can we do under the hood to get this car and this engine roaring with power and screaming for speed?
Well let's take a look bud. Woop, hold on I can't really do that. I can't give them all of our secrets.
Yeah we can't show them can we?
But, some of the things that we can talk about is, you know the carburetion, you know our fuel to air mixture is real big on making power. We can change our jetting with air bleeds, and our fuel, more fuel makes more power, but also on the other side of it leaves fuel mileage, so we can change our air bleeds to kind of make that work and give us some more power. We can also work on our timing, you know, we can give you some more timing, or take a little timing away, but there is a trade off there too, the more timing you run the more chance of you blowing the motor up. So, or we can put hotter spark plugs in it, that's kind of in between, it doesn't really give you a chance on blowing the motor up, but it will give you a little bit of power. Another thing is taping the grill, you're familiar with that, you know we tape up the grill, it gives us better aero attitude and gives it some speed, so...
Tony can you tell us a little bit about the engines themselves, how much horsepower they make and what they consist of?
Our engines are 358 cubic inch. They weigh about 590 pounds. The engine shop does a very good job on balancing all of the internal components of the engine, making them as light as possible but also keeping up the durability too, so it's a fine balance of making the horsepower but also making the parts live, so they have done a great job and we are proud of them.
Thanks Tony. It's all about speed and power, but it's also about state of the art technology, and teamwork. The level of engineering that Tony talked about and the work he and I do together on the car is reflective of the Army's cutting edge technology and teamwork of our soldiers. Those attributes make our Army and our race team stronger.
