Ryan Newman: A lot of success in the world of racing comes down to what happens when you combine training, building, and testing on the track.
The Army soldiers I am fortunate to represent call this maneuvers. When they take the strength of their technology and match it up with their physical and mental strength in action.
Now we're going to talk to Tony Gibson, the guy that's in charge of the guy that's in charge of the tires. He's going to tell us a little bit more about what we have to do to work on the racecar tires and why they're so important.
Tony Gibson: Well a couple of things that we do is we check wear. We do a wear indication on the tire when it's brand new and then when the tire comes off after a pit stop, we check it again and that will tell us which tire on the racecar is working the hardest. Another way to tell is air pressure. We check the pressures before they go over the wall and as they come off after a stop we check them again. That gives us our tire bills, tells us which side of the car, which corner of the car is working the hardest. And we can adjust that air pressure and make the car handle better or worse sometimes.
There's a lot of importance in the preparation of the tires - the wheel and tire assembly itself... Tony tell us a little about what we have to do to the tires before we go to the race track.
Tony Gibson: All of our tires are mounted and balanced by Goodyear, so that's kind of out of our control. NASCAR dictates how many tires we get - sometimes we get eight sets of tires and we can lay down in the pits to use for the weekend. Sometimes we get twelve. We have to kind of regulate how many tires that we use through the weekend and practice so we'll have enough to finish the race.
Getting the tires right is one of the many pieces of the puzzle of winning a race. It takes training, knowledge of available technology, and the experience to see what is not easily visible. Our race team learns this every weekend, the same way Army strong soldiers experience it everyday, executing their missions.
