About CBSV
Legal authority for SSN verification is found in the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), the Privacy Act at 5 U.S.C. § 552a (b),
section 1106 of the Social Security Act, codified at 42 U.S.C. § 1306, and SSA regulation at 20 C.F.R. § 401.100.
With the consent of the SSN holder, enrolled users may utilize CBSV to verify whether the SSN holder's name and Social
Security Number (SSN) combination match SSA's records. CBSV returns a "yes" or "no" verification indicating that the
submission either matches or does not match our records. If our records show that the SSN holder is deceased, CBSV
returns a death indicator. CBSV verifications do not verify an individual's identity.
CBSV is typically used by companies who provide banking and mortgage services, process credit checks, provide
background checks, satisfy licensing requirements, etc.
Fees include the $5,000 initial enrollment fee and a per-SSN verification transaction fee, that is currently $1.05 and is
paid in advance. Please see the User Agreement for details about CBSV.
SSA may close registration for CBSV User Accounts and suspend services at any time. Questions about CBSV may be
emailed to: ssa.cbsv@ssa.gov.
Note: CBSV does not verify identity, citizenship, employment eligibility, nor does it interface
with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) verification system. CBSV verifications do not satisfy DHS's I-9 requirements.
