A wide spectrum of activities is covered by permits. While the Division of Management Authority focuses on regulating international movement of species protected under CITES, it also issues permits under other domestic and international laws and treaties.

The Branch of Permits issues permits primarily for the import and export species that are protected by CITES. In addition, some examples of other activities we permit are: take of certain marine mammals; take and interstate and foreign commerce of non-native species protected by the Endangered Species Act, including a captive-bred wildlife registration; cooperative breeding programs for live exotic birds covered by the Wild Bird Conservation Act; and import and transport of injurious wildlife.

Through the permitting process valuable data are gathered, shared, and used to monitor and manage trade of animals and plants.
