Aproximadamente hasta la mitad de las personas que contraen paperas no presentan síntomas o estos son muy leves, por lo que no se enteran de que estuvieron infectadas por el virus.
Los síntomas más frecuentes son:
- fiebre
- dolor de cabeza
- dolores musculares
- cansancio
- pérdida del apetito
- glándulas salivales inflamadas o dolorosas al tacto en el área debajo de una o ambas orejas (parotitis)
Los síntomas por lo general aparecen entre los 16 y 18 días después de contraer la infección, aunque este periodo puede extenderse entre los 12 y 25 días después de la infección.
