Press Statement
Hillary Rodham Clinton
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
December 14, 2011

On behalf of the United States, I want to commend the Libyan people for the strides you have taken in laying the foundation for an inclusive and vibrant civil society over the last few months. As soon as Qadhafi’s oppressive grip started to loosen, you responded by claiming the rights and dignity of a free people and by answering the needs of your fellow Libyans – whether they were across the street or across the country. The Libyan people have demonstrated the determination, the courage, and the kindness that I know will make Libya’s future a bright one.

The United States was proud to stand with you as you began your journey to democracy. And we will continue to support your efforts as you build a new Libya. The people of the United States and those from countries around the world are eager to share their experiences and partner with you as you shape the future of your nation. I hope that our Embassy staff and our partner organizations on the ground will prove to be useful resources as you work to strengthen Libya’s society.

The road ahead won’t be quick, and it won’t be easy. But, the resolve and resilience you demonstrated during the difficult months of the revolution will serve you well as you transition toward a time of enduring peace and prosperity. This is Libya’s moment. The future depends on the decisions you make—and a strong civil society will help you create the bright future that Libya deserves. I look forward to hearing of your many accomplishments as you work toward a new Libya that is free, democratic, and prosperous.
