Project Name: Regional Iodine Reference Lab

Start Date: September, 2009

Background

UNICEF focuses its efforts to eliminate Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) in 16 countries, including Kazakhstan, which need additional support to accelerate their programs.  These are major salt producing countries with high numbers of unprotected newborns, low levels of salt iodization, and a need for technical support.1

Purpose

CDC, UNICEF and the Kazakh Academy of Nutrition are working together to establish a sustainable external monitoring system, led by the Kazakh Academy of Nutrition, for Iodine Deficiency Disease elimination programs in CEE/CIS countries.  CDC will assist in building lab capacity and sustainability.  This project will include designing and implementing measures of effectiveness and impact evaluations.
