NCHS Data Linkage Activities
NCHS has developed a record linkage program designed to maximize the scientific value of the Center's population-based surveys. Linked data files enable researchers to examine the factors that influence disability, chronic disease, health care utilization, morbidity, and mortality. NCHS is currently linking various NCHS surveys with air monitoring data from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), death certificate records from the National Death Index (NDI), enrollment and claims data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and Retirement, Survivor, and Disability Insurance (RSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefit data from the Social Security Administration (SSA).
Linked Data Resources by Topic Area:
What's New
New
- The linked NCHS-Medicaid Analytic eXtract (MAX) files now include Medicaid/CHIP data from 2008.
- Updated linked NCHS-USRDS files including information for End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) patients are now available (Please contact the NCHS Data Linkage Team for more information).
- In accordance with recent NCHS Ethics Review Board (ERB) guidelines, for NCHS survey participants younger than 18 years of age at the time of the survey, we will only provide linked administrative data generated for program participation, claims, and other events that occurred prior to the participant’s 18th birthday. We will no longer release linked administrative data for these survey participants generated on or after their 18th birthday. As a result of this change, the NCHS-MAX feasibility files have been removed for revisions. More information is available in the Youth Survey Participant Documentation File [PDF - 51 KB].
Upcoming
- Updated linked Mortality Files expected in spring 2013.
- Updated linked Social Security Administration files expected in late spring 2013.
