U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan will visit Los Angeles on Tuesday, March 22, as part of a two-day trip to California to highlight the urgent need to fix No Child Left Behind and to engage in conversations with parents, students and teachers about reforming education.

On Tuesday afternoon, Duncan will first deliver a call to action at the United Way Education Summit to encourage educators, parents, businesses and community leaders to continue to work together and use that collaboration to improve education across greater Los Angeles. The keynote remarks will be from noon-1 p.m. at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Following that event, Duncan will visit and hold a roundtable discussion at Tincher Preparatory in Long Beach from 2:15-3:15 p.m., with a media avail following from 3:25-3:40 p.m. at the school.

At 5 p.m., Duncan will engage in a community forum at Fremont High School in Los Angeles to discuss reauthorizing the Elementary and Secondary Education Act in a bipartisan way. At this town hall-styled event, Duncan will talk with parents and students about the parts of No Child Left Behind that need to be changed and how the education system as a whole can be improved. Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Ramon Cortines and incoming Superintendent John Deasy will join Duncan at the forum.

Duncan’s trip to California, during which he will visit schools and engage in conversations with community leaders in both Los Angeles and San Diego, will echo President Obama’s call to Congress to move quickly and fix what is broken in No Child Left Behind.
