U.S. Department of Education’s Rosalinda Barrera to Speak at California Bilingual Education Conference

Rosalinda B. Barrera, assistant deputy secretary and director of the Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA) at the U.S. Department of Education, will address the California Association for Bilingual Education’s (CABE) 36th annual conference Friday, March 25 in Long Beach, Calif. There, she will discuss the Common Core State Standards Initiative and later take part in a town hall meeting on critical education topics such as the urgent need to fix No Child Left Behind.

At 10:45 a.m., Barrera will discuss the two consortia preparing for nationwide common core standards implementation and how English learners are being considered. The Common Core State Standards Initiative is an effort led by the majority of states to establish a shared set of college and career ready educational standards for English language arts and mathematics that states can voluntarily adopt.

At 1 p.m., Barrera will participate in a town hall meeting on an array of education issues, such as the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act in light of the need to update No Child Left Behind.

CABE is the largest gathering in the nation of K-12 educators and parents committed to strengthening instructional programs for English learners.
