FTC: Made In The USA Comments Concerning Betty R. Nisle--P894219 May 30, 1997 Made in USA Policy Comments Gentlemen: I understand the Federal Trade Commission is proposing that the present standards re: "Made in USA" may be relaxed to allow foreign goods to be labeled as U.S. made. I question where your loyalties lie, but in addition, I cannot express my disgust strenuously enough. I am a home sewer and, if it were not for accurate labeling I would have made some lousy purchases. More and more fabrics are coming from China. They are about as well made as burlap, and I seriously doubt they would hold up through a single washing, let along many. I have had problems with quite expensive imported fabrics . Even though I wash them before cutting out the garment, I have had the finished garments lose their shape -- becoming long and skinny or short and fat. I can honestly say I have never had that happen with any fabric Made in the USA. I have spoken to many of my female friends and we have all had a problem with ready-to-wear clothing made in certain countries. it is not sized to take into account that American women are taller and, for lack of a better word, more voluptuous than in the country where the clothing is made. Even if the garment fit fine when purchased, when it is washed or dry cleaned, it no longer fit. In conclusion, I can see no reason, except to give foreign-made items an even bigger advantage than they already have, to change the labeling. I have just named a few of my objections.
