President Obama Signs Proclamation Commemorating National Hunting and Fishing Day

President Obama recognizes the vital contributions of America's hunters and anglers to wildlife conservation in America.  Last year, hunters and anglers spent an estimated $76 billion on trips, equipment, licenses and other purchases - spending that supports local jobs and economies and provides essential funding for conservation of wildlife species and habitat. As President Obama noted, all Americans are the beneficiaries of this commitment to conservation, regardless of whether they hunt or fish. The Senate also acted to support hunters and anglers this weekend, clearing the way for final passage of Senate Bill 3525, the Sportsmen's Act of 2012, after the November elections. The Administration supports passage of S. 3525, introduced by Senator Jon Tester (D-MT), which includes language reauthorizing a number of important wildlife conservation laws, including the North American Wetlands Conservation Act, the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Establishment Act. The bill also contains language introduced by Senator Begich that would allow the Secretary, in consultation with the Migratory Bird Conservation Commission, to increase the price of the Federal Duck Stamp.

Fish and Wildlife Service Supports National Hunting and Fishing Day, WSFR 75th Anniversary

This Saturday, September 22, marks the annual observance of National Hunting and Fishing Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the outstanding role anglers, boaters, hunters and shooters play in the support of fish and wildlife conservation. This year is special as it also recognizes the 75th Anniversary of the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program (WSFR) administered by the Service and one of the most significant and successful approaches to fish and wildlife conservation in U.S. history. Through WSFR, funds for fish and wildlife conservation are provided to state fish and wildlife agencies through payment of an excise tax on guns and ammunition, certain hunting and fishing equipment, as well as motorboat fuel. Tony Stewart, famous NASCAR Driver and Honorary Chairman of this year's NHF Day celebration, has a word of thanks to America's hunters and anglers.
