Secretary Duncan will participate in NBC News’ 2012 Education Nation, a year-round initiative to engage the country in a solutions-focused conversation about the state of education in America. The three-day event will bring together more than 300 of the country's thought leaders in education, government, business, philanthropy and media. MSNBC’s Tamron Hall will interview Duncan on the topic of turnaround schools. The Education Department has awarded millions of dollars in grants to states to turn around their persistently lowest-achieving schools through the department’s School Improvement Grants (SIG) program.

Secretary Duncan will deliver remarks at the Third Annual Back to School with The HistoryMakers Program. Duncan will discuss this year's theme of encouraging students to "COMMIT" to excellence and to finishing their education. The HistoryMakers is the nation’s largest African American video oral history archive dedicated to recording and preserving the personal histories of well-known and unsung African Americans.
